Lanka Kand opens with the bridge across the sea, making the passage to Lanka possible. War follows. The account moves through Kumbhkaran and Meghnad, then Lakshman’s wound and the Sanjivani. These episodes lead towards the death of Ravan. After the battle, Vibhishan is crowned, and the narrative turns from warfare to the events that prepare for the return to Ayodhya.
Mata Sita’s fire ordeal appears here in Goswami Tulsidas’s telling as the return of the real Mata Sita, who has been kept with Agni. Shri Ram then returns to Ayodhya by the Pushpak. The coronation follows, bringing the story from the crossing of the sea and the struggle in Lanka to Shri Ram’s rule in Ayodhya.
The teaching is that strength must serve dharma, with rightful rule as its purpose. Lanka Kand contains 121 dohas. Keep this purpose in view as the account passes from battle to coronation.
