Kishkindha Kand

किष्किन्धाकाण्ड · 30 dohas · 193 verses

Kishkindha Kand brings Shri Ram into the company of Hanumanji and Sugriv. These meetings turn the story towards the work of finding Mata Sita. The narrative proceeds through the killing of Bali and the monsoon at Kishkindha. The search then takes organised form as parties set out to find her. The purpose before them is clear, and the account follows their efforts towards its fulfilment.

At the close of the kand, Jamvant reminds Hanumanji of his strength. This reminder prepares the way for the deeds that follow in Sunderkand. Before Hanumanji crosses the sea, he is called to recognise the strength with which he can serve.

The teaching is to remember our capacity for service and put it to use when duty calls. Jamvant’s reminder directs Hanumanji’s attention towards the task before him. Kishkindha Kand contains 30 dohas. Carry that connection between strength and service into the next kand.
