Valmiki Ramayana · 119 sargas
The preparations for Shri Ram's coronation give way to a test of duty. Prompted by Manthara, Kaikeyi asks King Dashrath to fulfil her two boons, and Shri Ram accepts fourteen years of exile. Mata Sita and Lakshman accompany Him into the forest. The Kevat ferries them across the Ganga, bringing humble service into a story of royal loss. Dashrath dies, and Bharat refuses the throne that has become available to him. He meets Shri Ram at Chitrakoot, where love must face the demands of a promise already given. Shri Ram's paduka become the centre of Bharat's service. Through these events, we see that devotion requires restraint as well as affection. Each must serve faithfully, even when obedience brings separation from the one held most dear.
