Meaning, line by line

The high-minded Śrī Rāma, whose heart was set on his spouse and who stood enthroned in her heart, enjoyed life with her for many months. Sītā was dear to Śrī Rāma as a partner made available to him by his father. Nay, because of her manifold virtues and comeliness of form, his affection for her grew all the more.

The scene in the Ramayana

In Sarga 77, the wedding party returns to Ayodhya, where the newly married couples receive a welcome. Bharat then leaves for Kekaya to visit his maternal grandfather, accompanied by Shatrughna. Shri Ram remains in Ayodhya, serving His father, mothers and elders and attending to the welfare of the people. Maharshi Valmiki then turns to His life with Mata Sita. Many seasons pass in their company, and the shloka describes His mind absorbed in her and His heart given to her.

What it teaches

Love gives the beloved a place in our thoughts. Maharshi Valmiki describes Shri Ram's heart as given to Mata Sita, then speaks of her growing love for Him. Their affection is mutual. Each is attentive to the other, and each understands what rests in the other's heart.

This gives us a way to contemplate their companionship. Attention here belongs to love itself. The beloved's wishes and feelings receive care because the beloved is dear. As we listen, we can let our own thoughts rest on Shri Ram and Mata Sita together, remembering the affection with which they regard each other. Stay with that remembrance for a few moments. Then offer a simple prayer at their feet: may our hearts find joy in loving and serving You.
