Meaning, verse by verse

O mind, worship merciful Shri Ramchandra, who removes the terrible fear of worldly existence and the cycle of birth and death. His eyes, face and hands resemble fresh lotuses, and His feet are red like lotus blossoms.

His beauty exceeds that of countless Kamadevas, and His dark blue form resembles a fresh rain cloud. His yellow garment shines like lightning, and I bow to the pure Lord, the husband of Mata Sita, King Janak's daughter.

Worship Shri Ram, the friend of the helpless, the sun, who destroys the clans of demons. He brings joy to Raghu's family, is the source of bliss, shines like the moon over Koshal, and is King Dasharath's son.

A crown, earrings, a lovely tilak and ornaments adorn His noble form. His arms reach His knees, He holds arrows and a bow, and He has defeated Khar and Dushan in battle.

Goswami Tulsidas prays to Shri Ram, who delights the minds of Lord Shiva, Shesh and the sages. Dwell in the lotus of my heart and destroy the band of inner enemies led by lust.

About this hymn

Vinay Patrika is Goswami Tulsidas's collection of prayers to the Lord. Gita Press places this hymn under raag Gauri as pad 45. Its five stanzas form a complete prayer.

The story behind it

The fourth stanza recalls Shri Ram's victory over Khar and Dushan. In Ramcharitmanas, Aranya Kand, the passages leading to verses 18 through 20 describe their army advancing and the battle that follows. Shri Ram sends Lakshman with Mata Sita to a mountain cave and faces the army alone. Marich later recalls the defeat of Khar, Dushan and Trishira in doha 25.

What it teaches

The hymn begins by directing the mind towards Shri Ram and ends by asking Him to live in the heart. These two requests belong together. We remember His form so that our thoughts have a holy place to return to when desire pulls them elsewhere.

The word deenbandhu means friend of the helpless. It gives us reason to pray even while we struggle with faults. We need His help now. The last stanza openly names lust and the other inner enemies, so acknowledging weakness belongs within devotion.

For example, we may keep checking a delivery message while someone at home is speaking to us. We hear only half a sentence. Then we put the phone aside and listen again. Similarly, when attention wanders during prayer, we can return to one name of Shri Ram with patience.

Today, read the final stanza slowly. Ask Shri Ram to dwell within, then give one person your full attention.
