As Himavān gave away Pārvatī to the great Lord Śiva, and the deity presiding over seas bestowed Lakṣmī on Hari, so did Janaka give Sītā to Śrī Rāma and thereby earned fair renown of an unprecedented stature. How would King Videha (Janaka) make any supplication, since that Prince (Śrī Rāma) of swarthy complexion had truly made him ‘Videha’ by making him forget everything about his own self. When oblations had been offered to the sacred fire with due rites, the ends of garments of the Bride and the Bridegroom were tied together (as a token of their indissoluble union) and the couple began to circumambulate the fire.

The Bride and Bridegroom performed the circumambulation with charming paces, while all present looked at them reverentially and got the supreme bliss of their eyes. The lovely couple was beyond description; whatever comparison might be given it would fall short of the reality.

Joyously the sages bade the Bride and Bridegroom pace round the fire and accomplished all the rites including the ceremonial gifts. Śrī Rāma applied vermilion to Sītā’s head, a sight the exquisite beauty of which was altogether beyond description.

The scene in the Ramayana

King Janak offers Mata Sita to Shri Ram. Goswami Tulsidas compares this offering with Himavan giving Parvati to Shivji and the ocean giving Lakshmi to Vishnu. Janak bears the name Videh. Before Shri Ram's dark form, he becomes so absorbed that he loses awareness of his own body. The sacred fire offering is performed according to the rites, the wedding knot is tied, and the circumambulations begin. Shri Ram and Mata Sita circle the fire while those gathered watch with reverence. Words cannot contain the beauty of the pair. The sages joyfully guide the rounds and complete the wedding customs, including the ceremonial gifts. Shri Ram then places sindoor on Mata Sita's head. Again, Goswami Tulsidas finds the sight beyond description.

What it teaches

Love for Shri Ram brings reverence into our actions. These verses show this through King Janak's offering and the wedding rites that follow.

The word Bidehu, or Videh, carries two meanings here. It names King Janak, and it describes his loss of bodily awareness before Shri Ram. His attention rests so fully on the Lord that he forgets himself. Yet the wedding duties are fulfilled. The fire offering, the knot and the rounds receive their proper care.

We sometimes assume that deep devotion leaves no room for attention to a ceremony. Here, absorption and careful action stand together. The sages rejoice as they guide the rites. Those watching also participate through their reverence, receiving the sight of Shri Ram and Mata Sita as a blessing.

We can learn to give our attention with the same respect. Read the wedding verses slowly today. Pause at King Janak's offering, remember Shri Ram and Mata Sita, and carry that reverence into one duty at home.
