About the song

The prayer to Shri Ram in His childhood form gives this song its name. It belongs to Ramanand Sagar's Ramayan (1987), with music by Ravindra Jain. Its verses come from Goswami Tulsidas's Ramcharitmanas, while the naam kirtan refrain is traditional. The song brings passages from separate episodes into one act of remembrance. Some passages are sung only in part, and familiar sung forms soften the Awadhi wording. Each passage retains its own setting in the Ramcharitmanas.

The scene in the Ramayana

Lord Shiva invokes the child Shri Ram before narrating His story to Mata Parvati. In another Bal Kand episode, Lord Shiva accepts Shri Ram's will and repeats His name as Sati goes to test His divinity. In Aranya Kand, Anasuya receives Mata Sita and teaches that hardship tests patience, dharma, friendship and a wife's fidelity. At the bow ceremony in Bal Kand, Mata Sita places her trust in sincere love for Shri Ram. The assembly sees Shri Ram according to each person's feeling, with warriors, hostile kings and citizens responding differently. In Ayodhya Kand, King Dasharath assures Kaikeyi that the Raghu lineage keeps its word even at the cost of life. The final passage returns to Lord Shiva's teaching that Shri Ram's deeds and the Saints' telling of them have no end.

What it teaches

Remembrance of Shri Ram belongs in the midst of our responsibilities. These passages teach three things: seek His grace, remain faithful in hardship and keep the heart sincere.

*Seek grace with trust. The word dravau* is a plea for compassion. The prayer addresses Shri Ram playing in King Dasharath's courtyard, bringing the Lord's greatness before us in His childhood form. We approach Him with affection.

*Let hardship test our conduct.* Anasuya places patience and dharma beside friendship and marital fidelity. Their strength becomes clear when circumstances are difficult. Lord Shiva's acceptance of Shri Ram's will belongs beside this teaching. Trust does not remove the call to faithful conduct.

*Keep love and speech truthful.* Mata Sita trusts the sincerity of her devotion. King Dasharath declares the cost of keeping a promise. Together, these passages direct us to examine what we cherish and what we say. Before singing today, remember Shri Ram's childhood form, then choose one promise to honour with care.
