# Panchavati in the Ramayana: Shri Ram's Forest Home

Panchavati is the forest dwelling of Shri Ram, Mata Sita and Lakshman during their exile in the Ramcharitmanas. Here, Shri Ram teaches Lakshman, protects the hermits and faces the events that lead to Mata Sita's abduction by Ravan. Tradition places Panchavati at Nashik in Maharashtra on the Godavari.

## A dwelling becomes a place of teaching

At Panchavati, life in the forest includes both protection of the hermits and instruction in devotion. In Uttar Kand, doha 66b, Kakbhushundi recalls Shri Ram taking up His abode there and dispelling the hermits' fears. He then recalls the Lord's teaching to Lakshman. These belong together: Shri Ram gives shelter through His deeds and direction through His words.

Aranya Kand, doha 17, shows Lakshman bowing at Shri Ram's feet after hearing His discourse on *bhakti*, meaning devotion. Days pass in discussion of dispassion, spiritual wisdom, goodness and morality. Thus, Panchavati is also a place where Lakshman listens, learns and responds with reverence.

## Shurpanakha comes to Panchavati

The account turns from instruction to disturbance. In Aranya Kand, doha 17, Shurpanakha, Ravan's sister, comes to Panchavati and feels desire on seeing the two princes. Her arrival begins a sequence that brings conflict into their forest life. Uttar Kand, doha 66b, later recalls her mutilation and the deaths of Khara and Dushan in that order.

Aranya Kand, doha 21b, describes the relief after Shri Ram's victory. Gods, human beings and sages become fearless. Lakshman brings Mata Sita back, and Shri Ram embraces him. Mata Sita gazes lovingly upon the Lord. The same passage then turns to Shurpanakha approaching Ravan and inciting him against Shri Ram.

## Panchavati and Mata Sita's abduction

The conflict at Panchavati leads towards Mata Sita's abduction. Uttar Kand, doha 66b, recalls Ravan's conversation with Maricha, followed by the abduction of the illusory Sita and Shri Ram's desolation. The word “illusory” matters in Goswami Tulsidas's telling. In Lanka Kand, the fire ordeal is the return of the real Mata Sita who has been kept with Agni.

A later reference also recalls the cottage. In Lanka Kand, doha 36, Mandodari reminds Ravan of the line drawn by Lakshman. The supplied Gita Press note attributes the detailed account of this line to other works. Read that later reference with care, keeping the verse and its explanatory note distinct.
