# Vibhishan: Ravan's Brother and Devotee of Shri Ram

Vibhishan is Ravan's younger half-brother, a devotee of the Lord and the king of Lanka after Ravan's defeat. In Goswami Tulsidas's Ramcharitmanas, he remembers Shri Ram while living among demons, welcomes Hanumanji and later seeks Shri Ram's refuge. His story teaches that devotion rests on the direction of the heart, even amid surroundings opposed to it.

## Devotion in the midst of Lanka

Devotion is not determined by the family into which we are born. In Bal Kand, doha 176, Goswami Tulsidas identifies Vibhishan as Ravan's younger half-brother, a devotee of Lord Vishnu and a man of wisdom. When Brahma offers him a boon in Bal Kand, doha 177, he asks for pure love for the Lord's feet.

That love becomes visible in Sunderkand, doha 6. Hanumanji hears Vibhishan repeating Shri Ram's Name and approaches him in a Brahmin's form. After Hanumanji reveals his identity, both rejoice in remembering Shri Ram's virtues. Their meeting teaches us to recognise a devotee through remembrance of the Lord.

## Shri Ram receives Vibhishan

In Sunderkand, doha 42, Vibhishan leaves Ravan and turns towards Shri Ram with eager thoughts of beholding His feet. Goswami Tulsidas presents Ravan's rejection of this Saint as a loss of Ravan's own blessings. Vibhishan leaves with his heart fixed on the Lord.

Can someone coming from the enemy's side be received? Shri Ram answers this concern in Sunderkand, doha 44. He declares His protection for anyone who seeks refuge in Him, even considering the possibility that Vibhishan has come as a spy. He then sends Sugriv, Angad and Hanumanji to bring Vibhishan before Him. Surrender calls for sincerity, and the Lord receives the sincere heart.

## Refuge becomes service

Having sought refuge, Vibhishan places his understanding at Shri Ram's service. In Sunderkand, doha 50, he advises approaching the ocean for a means of crossing. In Sunderkand, doha 51, Shri Ram accepts his counsel and goes to the shore. The one who seeks shelter also takes responsibility for serving.

This trust continues in Lanka Kand, doha 67, when Shri Ram asks Sugriv, Vibhishan and Lakshman to care for the army. In Lanka Kand, doha 94, Vibhishan confronts Ravan in combat. Goswami Tulsidas makes the source of his courage clear: Shri Ram's strength enables him to face the brother he would otherwise fear.

## Vibhishan becomes king of Lanka

In Sunderkand, doha 49, Goswami Tulsidas describes Shri Ram saving Vibhishan from Ravan's anger and bestowing enduring sovereignty upon him. After Ravan's defeat, Hanumanji reports Vibhishan's kingship to Mata Sita in Lanka Kand, doha 107. His enthronement is also recalled in Uttar Kand, doha 68.

Yet the story continues to show his love for Shri Ram. In Uttar Kand, doha 12, Vibhishan stands among those serving the Lord at His coronation. Receiving a kingdom does not bring his devotion to an end. His example gives us a practice: when the Lord grants a position or responsibility, let it become another means of service.
